A Tale of Surprising Kindness: When a Student Let Me Stay on Her Dormitory Floor

Back in 2006, I made a trip to Canberra for an interview at a medical college. I figured I would book accommodation upon arrival, however upon reaching the city, a major event was happening and all the backpackers hostels and budget accommodation were completely sold out.

Hailing from Singapore, I considered maybe I could spend the night at the terminal – but soon learned that airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, does not operate 24 hours. With no idea how to proceed and getting a bit desperate, I boarded public transport and started wandering in the direction of a gaming venue, reasoning I could pass the night in a place operating 24/7. That wouldn’t put me in the ideal condition for nailing the admissions interview the next day, yet, as a student on a tight budget, a pricey hotel was out of reach.

Our society requires more individuals like that woman.

I must have looked out of place as a female student saw me wandering around downtown and asked if I was OK. I shared the story of my accommodation crisis and without hesitation she suggested I could sleep on the floor in her student dorm at ANU – which was perfect, given that my my interview was scheduled for the next day. Generously, she also provided some food: a leftover filled rolls she had taken home her evening job. This gave me a hot shower and a secure location and secure to sleep.

In retrospect, it’s clear to me what a big chance she undertook being a woman allowing a guy she had only just encountered sleep on her floor. At that time I existed within a bubble of male privilege and was oblivious to such safety concerns. Now, as a father, I’m amazed she took that chance – yet incredibly thankful.

I never did go to the Australian National University, and I lost touch with her again, but I’ve never forgotten her amazing act of generosity. My sincere desire is that life has returned her act of kindness abundantly. We could all use more people like that woman.
