Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.

He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, including the light-hued ensembles that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."

Price's death comes shortly after he unveiled his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with outfits on model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to blend menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in shaping form-fitting garments established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as several ensembles for her American tour following her marriage.

With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Performative Style: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The industry laments the passing to a true visionary whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
