Disturbing Unearthing: Bodies of Missing Mother and Child Found in Freezers in Austria

The deceased of a mother aged 34 and her young daughter, 10 have been found inside freezing appliances in an residence in western Austria.

The deceased, a Syrian woman and her child, who had been missing for several months, were detected on the end of last week. The cooling units were hidden behind a drywall partition in the flat, situated in the Innsbruck area.

Two individuals, a 55-year-old Austrian and his brother aged 53, were taken into custody in June. The elder brother, a colleague of the Syrian woman, stated to authorities last week that there had been an unfortunate event—but rejected homicide.

Addressing reporters recently, a spokesman for the legal authorities announced the brothers were being kept in custody on "strong suspicion of intentional killing".

Personal details of those involved have not been disclosed by law enforcement, in accordance with Austrian law.

The vanishing of the mother and child was originally brought to light by the female victim's relative, who resides in Germany, on 25 July 2024.

Authorities revealed the 55-year-old suspect claimed at the time she had embarked on an extended trip with her daughter to travel to her relatives in the nation of Turkey.

Her bank card was then noted as being active abroad repeatedly.

However when officers entered the mother's apartment, her smartphone was found.

A witness also claimed overhearing a disturbing sound in the apartment, and cries of "mama" on the day the two were thought to have disappeared.

A broader official inquiry was launched, with authorities finding various messages transmitted via the mother's device—such as a resignation letter to her workplace and communications to the male associate.

Law enforcement confirmed a significant cash transfer was also sent to the man.

The head of the State Criminal Police Office told media representatives on recently that a storage unit had been leased before the mother and child went missing and a freezer had been installed within.

The male siblings took out the freezer from the storage space on the day the woman and her child disappeared, Tersch stated. And a seven days after, they acquired an additional appliance.

Officials state they believe this suggests the fatalities were planned in advance.

"The reason for their demise was not identifiable due to the condition of the bodies," she stated.

The prosecutor's spokesman—representing the state—stated the exact sequence of events is not yet known, but the remains were expertly concealed and were not found during a prior examination.

While the brothers were taken into custody in June, it was not until the 12th of November that the suspect acknowledged an event and to hiding the bodies. He disputes any intent to kill, authorities said.

At the same time, his 53-year-old sibling admitted to a concealment but denied awareness of a murder.

The brothers are currently in pre-trial detention in prisons in separate locations, approximately 189 kilometers away from each other.

In a joint statement, the nation's official for women's affairs and Justice Minister stated the "alleged double murder... constitutes the sudden and brutal end of two human lives and reveals a cruel system".

"Female individuals are being killed due to the simple reality that they are female," they went on to say.

"Murders of women are a profoundly embedded and issue affecting all of society that we must combat firmly."
