Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during a recent discussion.

“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.

“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”

New York police shared surveillance images Monday of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries according to reports.

The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday morning near the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd did not participate this season, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.

He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in March and was expected to be an important component of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on August 2 and had to be helped off.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while healing from his surgery.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with New York in March.
