The beloved police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its 7th season, announced by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-part season written by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, as confirmed by the network.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The last season concluded in 2021 with a finale that drew in more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been widespread for some time, but official word only arrived recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to combat misconduct within the police force.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer celebrated for busts of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.

Yet, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the background, plot details suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had so many followers track the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new installment."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country was thought to be over while the series was off air, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor called appearing in the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."

"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those mercurial twists and turns."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty premiered in the early 2010s and became a highly successful TV dramas of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.

Broadcasters has not yet announced when the new season will hit screens.

The finale of season six drew the long-running storyline about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no plans for further series.

However, the network announced on this week that a new season is now being produced.
