Manchester United Set to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Signing for United
The forward, with half a year left on her deal, is known as a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing is viewed as a major signing for the Women’s Super League team.
Her exit from Munich has been anticipated since she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top strikers. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost the Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a major boost to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United appear to be building momentum.
Recent performances feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional activity:
- The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official commented: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
