New Year Revelers Urged to Bundle Up with Snow Expected Across the UK
Forecasters are saying an icy start to the new year, with snowfall likely across much of the UK. Revelers are being urged to dress warmly as bitterly cold temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.
Hogmanay Events Continue In Spite of Forecasts
The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay events are set to go ahead, following last year's postponement. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.
"An icy New Year's Eve night for those partying, so additional clothing will be needed," said the weather service.
Fireworks Under Open but Chilly Skies
In other parts of the UK, the weather is set to be suited to fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. Temperatures are due to be chilly, so extra layers vital, according to forecasters.
To the north, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to hamper visibility for watching fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.
Widespread Snow Warnings for Friday
As we enter Friday, advisories are active for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.
- Travel is anticipated to be disrupted.
- The public are advised to allow extra time for travel on the road.
- Hold-ups and call-offs are likely on trains and buses.
The Mercury Set to Plummet Even More
With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are likely to batter the north of the country.
Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
Health Warnings Issued
At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with readings likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency said this meant the weather could to lead to major effects across the NHS and care systems. This involves a expected uptick in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those aged 65 or over.
The message for all is clear: to see the new year in security, dressing for the cold is absolutely essential.
