The Japanese Economy Declines as Overseas Sales Suffer by American Trade Duties
Japan's economy has experienced a drop for the first time in six quarters, primarily caused by declining overseas shipments due to newly imposed US trade duties.

Japan has become the first Group of Seven country to report an economic contraction in the previous quarter.
As the United States yet to publish its gross domestic product figures for Q3 2025, the present G7 economic standings indicate:
- France: +0.5% quarterly growth
- UK: 0.1 percent
- Canadian economy: 0.1 percent (preliminary figure)
- Germany: 0%
- Italy: no growth
- Japan: -0.4%
Tourism Stocks Slump amid Diplomatic Rift with China
In addition to the economic contraction, Japan is experiencing an growing political tension with China regarding Taiwan.
Stocks in Japan's tourism and consumer companies have declined noticeably after China recommended its residents to avoid traveling to Japan.
This action by Beijing heightened a political dispute that was sparked by comments from Japan's new prime minister about the potential of sending forces in the event of a hypothetical Chinese attack on Taiwan.
The development caused a surge of sell-offs across Japanese leisure stocks.
- Oriental Land shares dropped by 5.7 percent
- The department store chain tumbled by 11.3%
- The national carrier declined by 3.75 percent
"The China-Japan tension over Taiwan and China's advisory discouraging travel to Japan brings short-term headwinds for consumer-facing sectors.
"Tourists from China account for roughly 25% of Japan's inbound traffic, making department stores, luxury retail, and tourism services particularly vulnerable."
Economic Decline Breakdown
Japanese gross domestic product declined by 0.4% in the third quarter, as industrial overseas shipments were impacted by duties levied by the US recently.
Exports were a primary factor of the decline, dropping by 1.2 percent compared with the previous quarter, and were 4.5% lower than a the same period last year.
Previously, the US administration had threatened Japan with a new 25% tariff on its goods, which was later lowered to 15% when the two countries reached a trade deal.
Consumer spending also declined, by 0.3 percent compared to the previous quarter.
On an annual basis, Japan's GDP contracted by 1.8 percent in the three months through September.
"The Japanese economic situation was strong in the first half of this year and today's GDP data showed that momentum is halted temporarily.
I expect Japan's economy to be returning on a gradual recovery trend going forward."
The US administration has lately recognized the impact of tariffs on Americans, reducing duties on imported food products including meat, produce, beverages and fruits amid growing concerns about increasing costs.
