The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named 6-7 Spared by Miami Dade County Mayor.
While perhaps not at the same level as granting clemency to Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade experienced a presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. No offenses are on her docket,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the commencement of a current administration.
“Except perhaps for eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life away from worry.”
The event, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a first responder, was named for the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “6-7” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The trend became so pervasive that a leading lexicon site recently declared “6-7” its 2025 word of the year.
A New Life
The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to open the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.
“It captures the essence of Miami: joyful, diverse, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Each year, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of croquettes and strong coffee as they toasted Six Seven’s big moment.
