New research reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such drugs must be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
Users who have come off the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Use is higher among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers caution that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
