Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Known as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.
She recounted the moments leading up to the attack, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Publicly, a senior official expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
