Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to offload a portion of his shareholding in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

This transaction estimates the Mercedes team at £4.6bn – a record for an F1 team – following the McLaren team was appraised at £3.5bn in an adjustment to corporate structure in September.

Wolff, who owns a 33% stake of the Mercedes F1 operation, would sell a stake in the region of five percent.

The 53-year-old would stay on as team boss and chief executive officer if the sale goes through.

Shareholder Breakdown

Remaining partners in the team are Mercedes and industrial group Ineos Group, who both hold a third of the company.

An official representative said: "We are providing no comment on the matter. The governance of the team will remain unaltered, and each shareholder are fully committed to continued achievements of the brand in Formula One."

Financial Increase

This arrangement signifies a substantial rise in value of Mercedes F1 after Ineos acquired its share for £208 million in 2022.

This surge demonstrates the growth in market values of F1 teams in the past few years due to the increasing appeal of the sport globally.

This was also seen in the box-office performance of the F1 movie featuring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which debuted in summer 2023 and has grossed over $630 million (£458 million) at cinemas worldwide.

The film represents the actor's top-grossing film and the most successful sports movie to date.

Present Standings

The Mercedes team are runner-up in the constructors' championship, behind McLaren Racing, with three Grands Prix remaining this season.

Mercedes' primary racer George Russell has won 2 of the 21 races this year and is fourth in the drivers' championship behind McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

The team won a unprecedented eight straight team titles and seven driver championships, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, from 2014 and 2021.
